Who are we?
Our name marks the significance of two key figures in the history of Scottish education: John Knox and Andrew Melville.
John Knox (1513-1572) was used by God to bring about the Reformation in our nation. The Reformation was not restricted to matters inside the Church, but more extensively the vision of the Reformed church was to have a Reformed school in each parish. Knox believed schools were necessary “for the virtuous education and godly upbringing of the youth of this realm.”
Andrew Melville (1545-1622) continued and advanced Knox’s vision of education. Heavily involved in tertiary education, he served as Principal of the University of Glasgow and St Mary’s College, St Andrews, and later became Rector of the University of St Andrews. He brought necessary reforms to the Scottish university system.
